Notes from a friend.
So one day Darrell and I went out to my Brothers place in Riverside. Don has a 1970 AMX 390 He still has it as a matter of fact. He raced it in the quarter mile back when Moreno Valley Mall was a racetrack, and we (Darrell and I) watched some of the timing runs nothing official, just for fun.
My Brother in law Don remembers Darrell, and remembers the Remembrance Day too-- He asked me about you and Lindy recently. He and Darrell had that whole "Car thing" going.
They only met a few times, but Don remembers Darrell quite well.
We came back late. Darrell and I are flying down the 91, talking about the racing, and how his car (the SVOII) would do in the quarter mile as well. Could he beat Don's car-- ECT? It's late.. and the freeway was mostly clear--so I start egging Darrell on to speed the car up. Darrell hems and haws, but I noticed the speedometer needle climbing. The next thing I know. Darrell says guess how fast were going? I said a Hundred! Darrell says Nope 110! So I said, "well we are going down hill". (That was us, always ribbing each other--He had a great sense of humor). For a change I'm the one who got scared about getting caught or crashing. So Darrell slowed her down to an easy trot at 80 85.
God I miss him.
We started 4x4ing in the mountains of Saddleback and up the backside (fire trails) of Big Bear shortly after that. -- (We discovered the treasures of Smokey's nut house together up there) and Darrell actually made a comment about getting a 4x4 truck like me and Rick had-- which really surprised me because I thought Darrell was 100% street cars and racing slicks at the ready-- only.
He loved to race up and down the streets in Huntington Beach, Newland Mostly. (We never messed with Newport Beach!) He and I would race our cars against each other when I had my 280z down the 405 freeway, to the house or where ever we were headed. We had to stop that when I got my truck, because it was simply no match for Darrell's horsepower. but it sure can climb a hill!! Darrell usually took the long way home -- getting off at Fairview road and the 405 near the South Coast Plaza mall when taking me back to his house to get my car so I could go home. Sometimes he made me late, but now I am glad he did that.
So that's one of my best memories of his SVO, that, and the conversation we had after he spun out and wrecked it. We had a lot of fun with the '74 also. I have a lot of memories of Him. All of which I cherish and wish I had on videotape!
Alas...
Bye for Now!
